“Life after PhD, Session 1: Build your career outside academia”

 

Speaker 1: Anna Varone, Patent Examiner at the European Patent Office, The Hague

 

Anna completed her PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, in 2019 where she worked on biomaterial-based combinatorial approach to promote axon regeneration after spinal cord injury using in vitro and ex vivo models. Before that she completed a BEng degree in Medical Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London. Anna is now a Patent Examiner at the European Patent Office in The Hague, working with patent applications on cardiovascular implants such as stents, distal protection devices and prosthetic heart valves. During her PhD, she did an internship at the patent office to explore opportunities outside the academic environment.

 

 

Speaker 2: Zofia Buttel, Research Intelligence Customer Consultant at Elsevier

 

Zsofia is a Research Intelligence Customer Consultant at Elsevier covering the Nordics & Benelux region. She is working closely with Elsevier’s academic, governmental and corporate customers, supporting them to inform strategic research planning, scientific landscaping, as well as evaluating collaborations using Elsevier’s Research Intelligence solutions. Zsofia is a real believer in diversity of knowledge and skills, cross-disciplinary moves and an ever-evolving career. Before joining Elsevier, Zsofia worked as a Molecular Biologist for over 7 years. As a researcher she built a specialist knowledge in R&D, worked at an innovative, independent research institute as well as in an academic, and a fast-paced corporate environment in various countries. As a Board Member of MCAA (2018-2020) she gained valuable insights into Research and Educational Policy. She has diverse interests, owns a beagle and enjoys working with people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

 

 

Speaker 3: Ryan Henderson, Consultant at ttopstart

 

Ryan Henderson, PhD, obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Colorado State University. In parallel to his studies, Ryan was an editor of an undergraduate research journal and researched the structure and dynamics of nucleosomes, the building blocks of eukaryotic DNA packaging. Determined to gain international experience, Ryan moved abroad to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Groningen. Working at the forefront of an industry-academia collaboration, Ryan deciphered the mechanism of a yeast membrane protein and applied that understanding to alter its mechanism for use in the biotechnology industry. As a consultant at ttopstart, Ryan works with academics and entrepreneurs to accelerate research and to commercialize promising biomedical innovations. In his 1.5 years at ttopstart, he has focused his attention on academic research grants, including those at the European level (e.g. ERC, MSCA-IF, MSCA-ITN, H2020 proposals) and the national level from various countries. Besides grants, Ryan also conducts market research, grant writing and grant panel interview trainings, and strategic advice to individual PIs and department/institute directors on their research focus and direction.
