Researchers meet Innovators

The main focus of the event will be to establish a discussion between startups in Ukraine and the EU on the pros and cons of managing projects on the edge between business and science. Focus of today’s European politics and media is directed towards Eastern Partnership region and countries. Ukraine has happened to be at the epicenter of significant changes over the recent decade. The country is torn by a political game and young talented students suffer because of it. However, it has a fast-growing startup scene and favorable environment.
Although the quality of Bachelor and Master-level graduates in Ukraine is highly rated, there exists a huge gap in cooperation between academia and business. There is a shortage of Institutes for commercialization of research results at universities. This slows down industrial development and fosters brain drain of highly qualified specialists to other destinations.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is one of the leading countries when ranked based on the number of successful applications for Erasmus Mundus Master’s programmes. Almost 56,000 Ukrainians study abroad, being able to gain top-class experience from post-industrial, knowledge-based and digital economies. It is of the highest priority to share their insights with local colleagues and discuss how Ukraine and other countries in the region can bring those skills and knowledge back home and boost innovation through academia-business cooperation.
At the same time, not many applicants from Ukraine are successful in receiving grants from innovative excellence programmes like the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Erasmus Mundus PhD programs and Horizon 2020 platform due to a lack of awareness. Therefore, there is a need to promote top-European programmes and upgrade proposal writing skills for receiving support to foster cooperation between science and business. The best startups of Ukraine will be invited to conduct workshops and join the discussion on bridging science and business in the country. The suggested venue is National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" or NaUKMA, the top-ranked 400 years old university in the centre of Kyiv.
